Driving Instructions. This is a pleasant 70Km drive west from Wanaka, on the way to the Haast Pass on the West Coast. Followed by a 30 minute walk to the Blue Pools. The drive to the Blue Pools is very interesting. You start off from down town Wanaka, and drive to Lake Hawea. Follow Lake Hawea then cross up and over the saddle and drop back.

The famous New Zealand Blue Pools are located almost smack bang in the middle of the long State Highway 6 Haast Pass-Makarora Road between Wanaka and Haast. You'll find it 72 kilometers from Wanaka in the south, and 72 km from Haast in the north. The closest town is 8 km away and is known as Makarora.

The Blue Pools Track is located in Haast Pass, between Haast and Wanaka. It's a lovely wooded bridge trail in the forest and then a long swing bridge to cross over before getting to the blue pools. The Haast area is a collection of tiny communities including Haast township, Haast Junction and Haast Beach, all close to the main highway SH6. Haast is a 142 km (2 hr) drive from Wanaka, and 119 km (1.5 hr) drive south of Fox Glacier township. Jackson Bay is at the end of the coastal road, an easy 32 km (30 min) scenic drive from Haast.

It is very easy to stop and complete the track mostly on boardwalks. Through the forest, you reach 2 swing bridges over the rivers. The Blue Pools are where the Makorora river and the Blue River meet.

The Blue Pools of Haast were the first jaw dropping moments of our trip to the south island in New Zealand. We had already been enamoured by what we had seen so far - Christchurch, Franz Joseph, Lake Mapourika, Lake Matheson, and everything else in between.
